Orientation and Mobility

Moving Through the World with Confidence

Independence begins with the ability to travel safely. Whether crossing a neighborhood street, navigating downtown Anchorage, riding public transportation, or traveling through Alaska’s unique environments, Orientation and Mobility training helps individuals move confidently wherever life takes them.

Our certified Orientation and Mobility specialists teach clients how to understand their surroundings, develop safe travel techniques, and make informed decisions while navigating both familiar and unfamiliar environments. Training may include human guide techniques, long cane travel, street crossings, route planning, public transportation, rural travel, and strategies for navigating seasonal conditions such as snow, ice, and limited daylight. Because every community in Alaska presents different challenges, instruction is tailored to each person’s daily routines and goals.

The confidence that comes from independent travel reaches far beyond getting from one place to another. It opens the door to employment, education, recreation, shopping, medical appointments, and spending time with family and friends. Every new route learned represents another step toward greater independence.
