Celebrating 30 Years
equipping Alaskans who are blind and visually impaired for success in life and work
The Alaska Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired acts to make sure that vision loss is not the barrier to Alaskans meeting their vocational goals or living safely and independently in retirement.
To achieve this vision the Center offers day and residential instruction in:
The Center offers job development and placement, on-the-job technology assessments, and coaching for retention.
Ninety percent of the people the Center serves are low vision – they have some usable vision that helps them function. The Center offers low vision assessments to determine the extent of remaining sight and the tools that will help people to make the most of it. The Center also partners with the District 49A Lions on a grant project supported by the Lions Club International Foundation to extend low vision help outside of Anchorage.
Sixty percent of the Center’s clients are older Alaskans who have developed an eye condition such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or glaucoma. The Center’s Visually Impaired Senior Alaskans program improves safety and quality of life for those aged 55 and older with home and community-based guidance and training, information and referral, support groups, and connection to the community.
The Center helps youth grow in independence and capability through a summer training, career development, and enrichment program. The Center also supports blind and visually impaired students in Alaska school districts thanks to a grant program providing up-to-date technology and staff training to ensure accessible learning materials.
The Center is the only organization of its kind in Alaska and serves the entire state as a 501c(3) non-profit. We depend on donations to be able to meet the needs of Alaskans who are blind and visually impaired.
