Have you ever thought about how you would cross a busy intersection if you had little or no vision? It can be done very safely with proper instruction and guided practice.

Our Orientation and Mobility component delivers instruction in the use of effective techniques by those who are blind or visually impaired so they can learn to walk with confidence in their homes as well as in residential and business environments. The curriculum is guided by the goals of each client and may include learning how to:

  • walk with another person using appropriate sighted guide techniques
  • use a long white cane to detect curbs and bumps on the ground and prevent stumbles which might lead to falls
  • travel safely in a residential area
  • cross traffic light-controlled intersections in downtown Anchorage
  • access the People Mover and/or the AnchorRIDES Paratransit bus systems in Anchorage

  • maintain balance and direction on icy streets
  • cross multiple-lane streets with islands in the middle (even with the right-on-red allowed in Anchorage and the snow that tends to accumulate on corners in the winter)
  • ways of going up and down stairs – even escalators – with confidence
  • navigate in shopping malls – a must in our Alaskan winter and one of the favorite parts of our overall curriculum
