This unique component promotes additional independence and confidence through the development and refinement of hand dexterity and work activities. Clients in this area receive exposure to tasks and equipment that are appropriate to their vision limitations and physical capabilities, and they are guided to achieve their highest level of personal independence and sensory awareness.

The Manual Skills component consists of two parts:

  • assessment of basic skills and comfort level using tools
  • instruction and development in advanced skills which are aimed at increasing fine motor skills, dexterity, coordination, and confidence.

Clients gain understanding of and experience with ways they can use their remaining senses while completing tasks in leather work, copper tooling, and woodworking. In the process of producing various items appropriate for their individual goals and abilities, clients develop effective means to organize workloads, practice safe habits around machinery and tools, create and design their own products, problem solve when challenges occur, and see a project through to completion. Adaptive measuring devices as well as hand and power tools are employed as indicated by the level of ability of each client. Instruction is also available in home mechanics and small repairs to enable clients to increase their confidence in being able to resume fixing minor household problems.

Those with limited experience in woodworking will find this component exciting and beneficial, and those who are more adept in this area will regain the ability needed to continue their avocational interests.
